Complete Transformation of a 1960s Tenement Apartment into Modern Luxury Second Home | Kraków, Poland
This project presents a complete transformation of a 1960s apartment located in a historic tenement house near Kraków’s Main Market Square, reimagining a previously outdated interior into a refined modern luxury second residence. Designed for owners permanently based in Germany, the apartment functions as an elegant urban retreat within walking distance of the city’s cultural and architectural heart.
The concept is built on the balance between heritage and contemporary design — preserving selected historical elements while introducing a new spatial language defined by modern luxury, modern classic elegance, and subtle Art Deco references.
Architectural Reconfiguration & Spatial Renewal
The original 1960s layout was fully restructured to meet the standards of contemporary high-end living, improving circulation, functionality, and overall spatial clarity.
The apartment was reorganized into a calm, cohesive composition with clearly defined zones for living, relaxation, wardrobe, and hosting. A generous walk-in wardrobe was integrated to support its function as a second residence, ensuring both practicality and a sense of effortless luxury.
The result is a balanced interior where historical depth meets modern clarity and everyday comfort.
Material Concept: Modern Luxury with Art Deco Heritage
The material palette defines a refined dialogue between modern luxury, modern classic detailing, and Art Deco-inspired accents.
The original oak parquet flooring was carefully restored, forming a warm and authentic foundation for the entire interior. White marble surfaces introduce timeless elegance and architectural purity, reinforcing the premium character of the residence.
A key feature of the design is the use of Portuguese ceramic tiles with delicate black-and-white classical patterns, introducing a subtle Art Deco rhythm and European craftsmanship reference.
White wall moldings and baseboards reinforce a modern classic framework, while glass doors, chrome details, and black accents introduce contemporary contrast and precision.
Fresh white flowers placed throughout the interior enhance the sense of purity and understated luxury.
Lighting Design: Atmospheric Layering
Lighting was designed as a discreet architectural layer shaping mood and perception.
A combination of concealed LED systems and warm ambient lighting enhances materials without overwhelming the space. Light softly highlights marble, wood, and decorative elements, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere throughout the apartment.
The lighting design allows for a smooth transition from bright daytime clarity to intimate evening ambiance.
Living Room: Art, Heritage & Dual-Generation Lighting Identity
The living area functions as the cultural and emotional center of the residence.
Original artworks and paintings belonging to the owners are integrated into the interior, transforming the space into a curated private gallery that reflects personal history and cultural identity.
A restored crystal chandelier acts as a sculptural focal point, introducing historic elegance into the modern composition. This is complemented by a carefully curated mix of lighting elements — combining both modern designer chandeliers and restored historical fixtures.
The result is a unique dual lighting identity, where contemporary lighting design coexists with classic and antique chandeliers, creating a layered and atmospheric interior expression.
The interplay of marble, oak, chrome, Art Deco detailing, and mixed lighting defines a timeless yet highly distinctive aesthetic.
Bedroom Suite: Modern Classic Sanctuary
The bedroom is designed as a calm and elegant retreat intended for long stays.
A sculptural marble console in the form of a fireplace acts as a central feature, serving as a place for books, fresh flowers, and personal objects. It reinforces a sense of curated intimacy and architectural softness.
Muted tones, natural textures, and controlled lighting create a serene environment focused on comfort and rest.
Wardrobe & Functional Luxury
A spacious walk-in wardrobe was introduced as a key functional element of the second residence.
Designed with precision and clarity, it ensures seamless storage while maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the entire apartment. The wardrobe becomes an integrated part of the architectural experience rather than a separate utility space.
Heritage Materials & European Craftsmanship
A defining aspect of the project is the integration of diverse European design references.
Portuguese ceramic tiles with classical black-and-white patterns introduce refined craftsmanship, while restored Art Deco parquet inserts and original oak flooring reinforce historical authenticity. These layered materials create a dialogue between eras, regions, and design languages.
From 1960s Apartment to Modern Luxury Second Residence
Through a comprehensive transformation, the apartment was elevated from a neglected 1960s interior into a high-end modern luxury second home.
Located within walking distance of Kraków’s Main Market Square, it functions as an exclusive urban retreat for international owners, combining heritage preservation with contemporary comfort and refined material expression.
The project demonstrates how architecture and interior design can significantly enhance both emotional experience and property value through a curated balance of history, craftsmanship, and modern lifestyle needs.
